Tasmania's disappearing giant kelp forests from Rebecca Ramaley on Vimeo.
This video is a tribute to the beauty of these forests in the hope that the attention they are finally getting from the government is not too late to prevent their extinction.
The decline of this kelp forest and numerous others along the east coast of Tasmania include: warming waters, increasing occurrence of invasive species and a disruption of the natural food chain due to overfishing.
As of January 2013, the kelp forest at Fortescue Bay (seen in this video) no longer exists.

Back in January you probably saw the video by two school students that launched the first Legoman into space, well here comes the first Lego space shuttle sent to the stratosphere.
What's got me worried is that there seems to be too many amateurs sending helium balloons up into near space. In a few months time, when I'm winging my way to Canada, I don't was my aircraft colliding with some turd-breath's experiment. Look at this near-mis in the following video (at about 3:45 in).

In the last 24 hours, the world population ticked over 7 billion . So that go me thinking. As a 51 year old, what would have been the population on my birth date. Here's what I found...
The Guardian says when I was born the world population was approximately 2,962,787,511.
Another indicator, or Worldometer, says I was the 3,045,349.202nd person alive on earth and the 76,702,605,147th person to have lived since history began.
So what does that mean? I'm small and insignificant. So are you, now get in line!

This gorgeous view of the Aurora Australis was taken from the International Space Station (ISS) as it crossed over the southern Indian Ocean on September 17, 2011. The time-lapse made from still images spans the time period from 12:22 to 12:45 PM ET. (23 minutes)

Pioneering forest research by the Australian National University has found Tasmania's native forests contain up to six times as much natural carbon than previously thought.
The ANU research team, led by plant ecologist Brendan Mackey believes the new evidence may force a "rethink" of national and state policies that encourage logging of native forests.
The case is now compelling for national and international efforts to prevent global warming to include the losses for carbon storage caused by the degradation and logging of native forests in south-east Australia.
Up until the publication of the new research, both the Federal Government and the International Governmental Panel on Climate Change had been forced to rely on generalised figures for the amount of carbon stored in temperate rainforests.
These figures calculated the contribution to carbon storage made by natural native temperate forest worldwide, as equal to 217 tonnes of carbon stored per hectare of forests.
Other key ANU findings were that:
ANU research found that 56 per cent of unprotected native forests in south-east Australia had been commercially logged.
This meant the total capacity of these forests to store carbon was about 40 per cent below their total potential if the trees were allowed to regrow and mature undisturbed.

In ways reminiscent of the Borg collective from "Star Trek," robots are learning to work together in large groups. The goal of iRobot's swarm project is to coordinate the actions of groups of hundreds of individual robots. A Swarm Operating System (SwarmOS) is under development to control as many as 10,000 robots or SwarmBots.

This topic is flying around blog networks faster than you can say "Bush is a wanker" ...so I'll join in!
The Administration (apparently something like the mysterious "management" in that Carnivale TV series!) wants to suspend funding on further service missions to the Hubble Space Telescope.
What would this achieve? Humans are explorers and we need to look out into the stars to see where we are going. The telescope can also tell us where we have come from and at what stage our evolution is at. We have to find these answers in the Universe so we can survive, not only on this planet but out there...
For inspiration view the latest Hubble image.

It seems someone had the time to go to University to study Homer... Homer Simpson that is!
Researchers at Rutgers University wanted to examine how Homer and other characters in the television show "The Simpsons" casually promote an unsafe diet, among other things.
The study concluded "We should hope that parents have a bigger effect on kids than the cartoons they are watching."

Today marks the start of daylight saving time here in Tasmania. We're now one hour ahead of other states on the Australian eastern seaboard. Most states will change in three weeks, except Queensland. Being closer to the south pole Tasmania has more summer daylight hours than any other state in Australia.
Last year my friend Tony wrote a patch for my Mac that switches the time three weeks ahead of AEST and it kicked in this morning, right on time!
